CAPESTANG ARCHBISHOP CASTLE

The interpretation center evokes the power of the archbishops of Narbonne at the end of the Middle Ages, their interest in Capestang, the magnificence of the castle where the States of Languedoc sat and where the Duke of Berry stayed. The ceremonial room of the castle is the highlight of the visit with its walls where the arms of France and B. de Fargues (5th century) alternate and, a real gem, the painted ceiling from the 140th century: XNUMX beams decorated with foliage on red background, supported by consoles on which the mouths of Leviathan are painted; XNUMX closoirs with the most varied themes: courtly love, nobles and lords, real and fantastic animals, hunting and tournament scenes, religion and triviality. The whole is surprising with its remarkable conservation and the extreme diversity of the themes covered. If the artists are unknown to us, for sure, a great master has passed through there!
In 2024 the interpretation center is getting a makeover, thanks to modern facilities, you will immerse yourself in history and get closer to the paintings!
Synchronized lighting brings the visitor's attention to the striking elements of the painted ceiling. An interactive table allows the visitor to take control, thanks to new technologies. A video, “the story of Jean d'Harcourt” putting the castle in its historical perspective, The 15th century archbishop tells about his ceiling.
Access a 3D model: touching the screen allows you to view the state room from all angles and discover the paintings of incredible lively and funny scenes.
A third program allows you to discover in close-up the closoirs, the artists' brush strokes and the liveliness of the almost intact colors of the Middle Ages classified by theme.
Guided tours of the site take place all year round, by reservation.
