TUNNEL OF MALPAS

The Malpas tunnel is the one and only tunnel along the entire Canal du Midi route, between Toulouse and Marseillan. Its construction was completed after the death of its creator, Riquet, who had many worries for this site. Beyond the exceptional character of this work of art, an unusual specificity deserves to be explained.
Less than 2 meters below the canal passes the Bordeaux-Sète railway line (late 19th century), and still below these two galleries, a third, the underground aqueduct evacuating the water from the dry pond of Montady from the 13th century, justifying the name of the hill of Ensérune "the pierced mountain".
